Population and Location:

  • Germany is a Federal Parliamentary Republic
  • Capital is Berlin
  • Germany has 16 Federal States: Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bayern (Bavaria), Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hessen (Hesse), Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Nordrhein-Westfalen (North Rhine-Westphalia), Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate), Saarland, Sachsen (Saxony), Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt), Schleswig-Holstein, Thueringen (Thuringia)
  • Germany has a Chief of State (President): Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and a Federal head of Government(Chancellor): Angela Merkel
  • Bicameral legislature-Bundesrat (69 seats; members appointed by each of the 16 state governments) and Bundestag (the number of seats can change-there were 630 seats in the 18th elected term. Half of the seats are elected through proportional representation and the other half are elected through single member district majority vote.)
